The European hedgehog is an endangered species. It is threatened by the increasing cultivation and urbanization of those European lands which contain the hedgehogs habitat. Losing this not only useful but also charming friend of ours would be an incredible reduction of the world's heritage. Hedgehogs are important regulators of the populations of lower forms of life, like snails, insects, worms, etc. Fortunately, in most of the European countries the hedgehog is a wildlife which is under protection of law. The hedgehog is to be preserved as a wild species, so - in Austria and many other countries - it's not permitted to keep a European hedgehog permanently as a pet in your home.
The European hedgehog needs human shelter and help. Many veterinarians give them medical care free of charge. My wife, Elfi and I, Heinz - we are endeavered to help hedgehogs survive the winter time. If a hedgehog is found in late autumn weighing less then 700 grams it should be taken home and hosted till next May, because the propability of awakening from it's hibernation is very low.
This webSite is made to give you information about the hedgehogs's way of life and our experiencies in keeping hedgehog foundlings. But first of all, this should provide a lot of fun with the various pictures of our beloved hedgies. Feel free to download and use them for whatever you like. We don't hold any copyright!
